Six Middle Tennessee companies officially reported mass layoffs in the past week, the Department of Labor and Workforce Development reported Monday. Companies are required to report to the state when they plan to layoff 50 or more workers, and they are encouraged to report smaller layoffs to alert the state to people in need of job assistance. Between March 1 and March 8, the six Middle Tennessee companies announced that they have eliminated or plan to eliminate a total of 279 jobs. WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- The number of available job openings fell by nearly one-quarter last year, as finding a job became much tougher. Labor Department data released Tuesday estimates there were 2.5 million jobs available at the end of December, down from 3.2 million one year before. At the same time, unemployment soared by more than one-third, leaving more laid-off workers competing for fewer jobs. ROCHESTER, MN (KTTC-DT) -- Just four days after a new contract agreement between cab manufacturer Crenlo and its employees, there's some unfortunate news for workers. As we first reported at 10 p.m. Monday on KTTC NewsCenter, we have learned that there will be more lay-offs and most of the plant employees will be on unemployment for nearly a week.
